Hiking the Iron Mountain - Poway, CA

One of the good things about living in San Diego area is the number of hikes we can do on a day trip. One of the most popular ones is the Iron Mountain Trailhead, located just outside Poway.

There is no entrance fee and the parking is also free of charge. The total distance of the trail is about 10,3km (there-and-back; it's not a loop trail) and the elevation is around 490m. There are pretty interesting rock formations along the way and we get amazing 360-degree vistas as we start ascending the trail. Something very important for us: dog are allowed! :)

We woke up at 4.45am and got there right on time to witness an amazing sunrise. We went early not only to have a better light for pictures, but also to avoid the crowd that started to arrive when we were already on our way back. We were the second to park and when we left, around 10am, the parking lot was already completely full. The Sun was harsh and the light was definitely not very appealing anymore. So to have better pictures, avoid the crowds and have a more pleasant hike, go early! :)

The trail is quite easy, even for someone like me, with a broken toe lol I broke it more than a month ago but it's still annoying me a bit; but not to the point to locking me inside the house. However, I am not ashamed to say that I was always a little behind these two...not only because my pace was a bit slower, but actually cause I was constantly stopping here and there to make some pictures...

One that really enjoyed the experience was our "pantera" Otto, who was always zigzagging in front of us, excited with everything around him...and to think that he was a dying starving street dog abandoned on the streets of Mompox, Colombia...now he is our 65lb stallion that is enjoying life in California...

Almost reaching the summit, we stopped for some rest and pictures at beautiful vista points that offered pretty incredible views...

Once we reached the top, it was time for a little picnic and a bit of sunbathing...

Then, it was time to head back. The crowds were starting to arrive and the Sun was beginning to get a bit to hard...the descent was much faster than the way up and pretty quickly we were back at the Jeep.

I would also recommend going during the week since it can get really busy on the weekends.

It was a great day and I would certainly do it again. The scenery is beautiful, the trail is pretty easy and the views we get along the way are gorgeous. It's amazing that so close to the ocean we can find places like this...

I'll be back here soon.

Saludos!
